HOW THIS CALCULATOR WORKS
Salary is only one part of a job change.
Annual compensation is base salary plus annual bonus. Estimated annual working hours are based on weekly work hours and an allowance for paid time off. Commute is displayed separately because it is unpaid time that can affect the overall value of a job.
The effective hourly estimate is compensation divided by estimated annual working hours. It does not include taxes, healthcare, retirement matching, equity, insurance, stock options, or other benefits.
These calculations use 52 weeks per year and five working days per week as simplified assumptions. Results are estimates, not financial advice.
What this comparison can and cannot tell you
A calculator can make measurable trade-offs easier to see, but it cannot measure everything that makes a job valuable. A new role might offer better learning opportunities, a stronger manager, more flexible work, better job security or a clearer path to promotion. Consider those factors alongside the numerical result.
For example, a $15,000 salary increase may look attractive until a longer workweek and commute are included. On the other hand, accepting a lower salary can sometimes make sense when the role provides substantially better flexibility, benefits or long-term career opportunities.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate my after-tax salary?
No. This version uses gross compensation. Tax rules differ by country, state and personal situation.
Should I take the job if the hourly pay is higher?
Not necessarily. Career growth, manager quality, job security, benefits, flexibility and personal priorities can matter more than a simple hourly calculation.
Why count commute separately?
Commute time is usually unpaid and can be a meaningful part of the time cost of a job.
